Later that year, my older brother and I began to go into the city to see Renée Geyer, who had an amazing soulful, jazzy voice and a funky band. Smells of marijuana and patchouli oil swirled around us, and people would laugh at the "little kids" as we walked around, but I was just transfixed by the music. She'd do a song by Chaka Khan and Rufus, and the next day i'd harass the import record shop owner for a record by them. Everything had changed.

ReplyDeleteHi Simon3x6,
ReplyDeletethanx for this gem! A few real good tunes on this one that's for sure...the opening track & the closing track.. in between it's a nice journey [:-)
You bet your ass I'm intersested in more aussie-funk-soul from the Renee Geyer Band! I totally liked (both) your rhodes-renderings, & as you probably know by now) I have a "thing" for wah-wah myself, on guitar, keys or even saxophone...as a kid I grew up "on metal" also btw, but along the way Coltrane changed it all for me (and Mingus, Kirk & Miles) Welcome to the 'BIG ears-club, hope to hear from you lots more,
peace, E-mile
This to my surprise is one heck of a R&B/funk record. Wow. I just happened to be listening to Stevie Wonder's "Innervisions" right before playing this and it holds up pretty well. My wife is going to freak when she hears this. Great share. Thx
ReplyDeleteThanks again simon!
ReplyDeleteThanks Soulbrotha, invisblenigma, ish, beat2go00, paros, anonymous, e-mile, avantgrape and gianni for your comments.
ReplyDeleteI'm now understanding that the thing I always hear from bloggers - that they wonder if they're posting into a vacuum sometimes - so it's great to hear that you guys are enjoying it!
More Renee later - a good live album, and also her only international release, a slicker afair recorded in LA with people like James Jamerson and Ray Parker Jr. I'll post back on this thread when it's up.
More comments welcome :)
Absolutely love it! Thanks and more Renee, please!
ReplyDeleteSimon, post more by RGB, for sure - this is top-notch!
ReplyDeleteI just started a blog a few days ago, too. So far, it's links I've already posted elsewhere, but please stop by from time to time.

Hi Simon,
ReplyDeleteI see you've refreshed the blog. Let me give you one big thank you, your work is appreciated. You (and Greg) exposed me to so many artists I might not have otherwise known or heard about. It's great to have something to identify when I'm digging at the record stores. I may not be able to thank you for each d/l but know that you work is not in vain.
