54 albums from Mongo Santamaria

Simon says :
Going by the downloads for "Latin Rhodes 2", we've got some latin heads here. So here are three fantastic, slamming slabs of Mongo Santamaria vinyl, donated here by Bacoso - followed a discography of 54 of his albums. Some are uploads by readers here, and the rest are blog links - this one of those posts that keeps growing and growing. Yes, you need all of these albums :)

Mongo Santamaria
"MIGHTY MONGO" (1964)

Bacoso says :
Essential! Heavy heavy heavy descarga session from way back when Mongo was still killing 'em dead and hadn't sold out to lame soul covers and boogaloo nonsense. Features the ferocious "Bacoso" which develops into a scorching percussion battle mid way through and the storming "Descarga at the Blackhawk". Interestingly enough, one of Joao Donato's first U.S. recordings on which he plays both piano and trombone - he contributes "Bluchanga".
Ripped @320 from original vinyl.
One of the great latin LPs of the 60s.

Mongo Santamaria
"MONGO EXPLODES" (1967)

Bacoso says :

Mighty Mongo from 1964 on Riverside. One of my favourite Mongo albums, this one is a cracker not least for Marty Sheller's furious "Dirty Willie" .

Here's a review from Dusty Groove :
"A killer early album by Mongo Santamaria -- almost an equal blend of jazz and Latin rhythms, and a great illustration of the unique contribution that he was making to both types of music back in the 60s! Mongo's group here is filled with some really great horn players -- Nat Adderley on cornet, Marty Sheller on trumpet, Bobby Capers on alto sax, and Pat Patrick on baritone -- really hitting a hard-edged groove that's as filled with soul jazz solo inflections as it is with Mongo's great work on percussion! The reeds bring a sharp edge to the record that keeps on going throughout - pushing the set with a lot more soul than other Latin sides from the time, particularly those in the charanga mode and most tracks are short and feisty."

Mongo Santamaria
"FREE SPIRIT" (1984)

Bacoso says :
Mighty Mongo for Tropical Buddha from 1984. Mongo hooked back up with the great Marty Sheller for this excellent latin jazz LP which was coordinated by none other than Jack Hooke, DJ extraordinaire and the man behind the Monday night salsa meets jazz sessions at the Village Gate. Two essential cuts on this one : "Power Struggle" and "Espiritu Libre" (which has just had a reworking by Beatconducter!) Highly Recommended. Ripped @320 from original vinyl.

  1. Thanks for all your efforts here. I've been inspired by you and the other intrepid LP collectors to start my own blog and give a bit back. Please visit me at http://rootsisforeveryone.blogspot.com - my first post is a great Stitt/Ammons album, plenty more to come!

  2. Thanks Simon, you filled some nice holes in my Mongo collection via Bacoso and the links. I'm working on a post that I will hopefully get up tonight, I'm pretty sure you'll dig it too. It's Kenny Barron's "Lucifer" which has lots of Rhodes, you know, I too can never have enough. Keep up your good work, it's greatly appreciated.

  12. hi all,
2 more comp albums added to the discography, courtesy of reader Stefan :

    1. The compilation “Arriba!” (1996). It contains two albums from Mongo Santamaria: “Arriba! La pachanga” (1961) and “Mas sabroso” (1961). Unfortunately the last three songs are missing in the download.

    http://sonero-sonero.blogspot.com/2008/07/mongo-santamaria-arriba.html

    2. The compilation “Mambo Mongo” (1993). It has the same name and is from the same year as a compilation you have already listed, but this here is a completely different CD from another label and with other songs ;)
Songs 3 – 11 are the complete album “Dawn” (1977) for which Mongo won a Grammy!! The other two songs are from somewhere else (it’s a really strange compilation).

I've added the Taringa link to the discography as it also gives people access to other great albums.

Also, I've had an email from reader Stefan pointing me to a post of Santamaria's 1987 album "Soy Yo", which has also been added to the discography.

chants" was only a new edition of old songs Mongo had already published earlier.

  54. Thanks a lot for the uploads and the research, Xerxes!

Well that leaves us with two to find :

1967 "Explodes at the Village Gate"
    1983 "Magic" (Roulette)

    ReplyDelete
  55. 1967 "Explodes at the Village Gate"

I have this album, but I won't have access to it until September. It contains the best version of Afro Blue ever recorded (IMHO)

    ReplyDelete
  56. If you're able to bring us that album it'd be fantastic Ernest - "Afro Blue" is one of those songs I can bever get enough of :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hi Simon,

Sorry for the delay. End of semester assessments & marking...

I have just uploaded a vinyl rip of Drums & Chants, then checked in comments and seen Xerxes's point about the 'Afro-Cuban Drum Beaters', so that was a waste of time eh?!

If anyone does want to hear a fat but sometimes noisy vinyl version then go to:

    http://www.sendspace.com/file/0py7n4

    Cheers,
    Rowan

    ReplyDelete
  58. Not a waste of time at all Rowan, your rip sounds great, and many thanks for this.
I've done a new post for it :

  59. In the album A-La-Carte, the track called Teresa (composed by Bill O'Connell) is missing, and the original version of Congo Blue, from Go, Mongo! has 7:30, and that version has 5:45. And the worst part that these 2 albums are excellent!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Hi anonymous -
my CD copy of "a La Carte" does not contain that track. It's a 2-for-1 CD with "Afro Indio", so they may have left off a track in order to fit both albums on.
If you come across it, please post it here, thanks.

  71. First, thank you for all that wonderfull work. I've got two Mongo Cassettes many years ago from a friend and let them run forth and back in my car for month back then. Since I've found this blog I'm again into this great and heart-warming music and only now I understand more and more also the background and way of M.S.. Unfortunately I missed the record 'Images'. All links are dead.
Could one of you who downloaded it reup it again please?
Would be realy wonderfull as it is also not in the catalogs of the sellers anymore.

  74. thanks anonymous - I've put a link to Flageolette's post. Just so you know : I always prefer to link to people's original posts instead of their rapidshare links. That means that they get people thanking them for bothering to upload, so they think it's worthwhile and post more good stuff.
Anyway thanks for tracking this down!

This wonderful music can't be lost. I recommend you Magic, Chango: Afro-Cuban Drums and Explodes at the Village Gate. Thanks a lot!

  76. Thanks a lot for Images.
Unfortunately Mongomania is also off, and I discovered that I have the wrong one - this 2CD Tribute by Gerardo Rosales...
Anyways, would be wonderful if one of you could up it again.

Listening to M.S. and Friends, Mambo Mongo a lot - it's a great piece of music. And, be aware of the man behind Mongo, Marty Sheller. His arrangements are very hot and special. Without him Mongo's music would not be the same.

    Best Wishes

Afro American Latin - La Lupe - Afro Cuban Drum Beaters - Mongomania - Sofrito - Up From The Roots

    ReplyDelete
  78. Yes, that's exactly the trap I was running in - read above! Mongomania of M.S. is not a double CD or LP and has different songs. So it seems like that we have another one to hunt.

By the way, has anyone noticed yet that there is also a song missing on Afro Roots compared to the original LPs/CDs Yambu and Mongo? It's Mi Guaguanco, the track before the last one of original Yambu (in between Conga par Gozar and Columbia) left out because of max CD time prob. I found this song on the Fania Comp Mongo's Greatest Hits.
A link to this one is:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/193078912/Mongo_Santamaria.Greatest_Hits_1995_.rar
It still works but I couldn't trace down where it comes from. The blog link shown in filestubes is dead so hurry.

  79. Actually that was someone else's tribute to Mongo called "Mongomania" ....

    HERE is Mongomania :

  80. Unfortunately 2 songs are missing - Mamacita Lisa and Mongo's Boogaloo - in this Mongomania post. Mongo's Boogaloo I found on the Mongo Santamaria's Greatest Hits CD release (one of the bonus tracks) but Mamacita Lisa - any idea?

And, got my hands on a Yambu LP release and made hi-res scans of the cover. Anybody interested? And if, where is it best to up them?
    cheers

  98. Well that was the GOOD news about this thread.

And now the bad news ...
Someone systematically went through and had about 32 of the links deleted. I discovered it yesterday when getting ready for the "Mongo Magic" post.

Well, I spent Saturday night uploading what I had, and also finding some new links. The end result is that we are still missing a few of Xerxes' generous uploads :

    1961 "Mas Sabroso"
    and
    1962 "Viva Mongo!"

I couldn't find these on my harddrive, so if Xerxes or anyone else could re-up these, it would be much appreciated!

Also, of course, the holy grail of the thread :

1967 "Explodes at the Village Gate" :)

    thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  99. one more comment .....
I've just purchased "Explodes at the Village Gate" on ebay ... just need to wait for the swimming donkeys to bring it across the pacific ocean, but shouldn't be too long ..

    ReplyDelete
  100. Awesome work here Simon..Very much appreciated..Many thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  101. You're welcome Sasha :)

OK everyone, while I'm waiting for "Explodes at the Village Gate" to arrive, would appreciate some people trying to track down these ones :

    1961 "Mas Sabroso"
    1962 "Viva Mongo"

    OR

"At the Black Hawk", which is a re-issue of "Viva Mongo" and "Mighty Mongo".

    Thanks for your assistance folks!
Ideally, someone who downloaded these before could re-up ?

    ReplyDelete
  102. WOW! FINALLY, MONGO MAGIC IS HERE. After 2 years searching it, I can have and listen this wonderful album. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

With "Chango: Afro-Cuban drums" (some songs are in Mongo Santamaria and his Afro-Cuban drum beaters), "Explodes at the Village Gate", "Slap it" (12" single) and the full version of "Congo Blue" (from the album Go, Mongo!) I complete my Mongo Santamaría collection.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Hi anonymous -
    Glad you're enjoying it :)
Sounds like you've kept the full collection - could you re-upload the missing ones for us ?
    thanks,
    Simon

    ReplyDelete
  104. Updates :

    - All the rips of "Fuego" (1972) were at 192kbps, so I've ripped from CD @ 320 and replaced the previous link with this one. Nice funky album, so check it out.

    - bit more research : "Mas Sabroso" is contained within "Arriba", which was actually a re-release, so still to come are :

1967 "Explodes at the Village Gate" (1967)
which I'll rip when it gets here,

    and
    1962 "Viva Mongo"
(or "At the Blackhawk", which contains that album).

then we have a complete discography. Onto it guys! :)

    ReplyDelete
  105. Hi Mongo Maniacs,

Mas Sabroso is comped on Arriba!
But haven't checked out the songs yet. Could be that it's not complete or short versions as on other 2 for 1 CDs.

Thanks for the Videos by the way.
First time that I saw Mongo playing - great!

  106. P.S.:

    ReplyDelete
  118. The song "El Tres" is the non-LP B-side of the Vinyl, 7", 45 RPM, Columbia 4-44886 from 1969. The A-side is the song Twenty-Five Miles.

Perhaps someone can add this song, which features the Cuban tres guitar, to this collection of Mongo-music. Then this discography will be complete!

    Help would be much appreciated!!

  121. Wow. What else can one say?

You all (esp Simon) are heroes. Alot of this stuff has been über rare. Gotta love Mongo. I first heard of him from Jimi Hendrix believe it or not. Jimi mentions him in a song I can't recall at the moment.

Later I realized that he wrote Afro Blue (which I knew from Coltrane)... but these days I am seriously digging me some Santamaria direct. Thanks you guys.

  143. Whoa! I just came upon 'Never Enough Rhodes' after not havin' visited a while. I was bedazzled by Mongo Santamaria's treasure trove ...54 discs. Memory flashback! As a college sophomore I was hipped to Mongo. Sayin' all that to say...thank you for having 'n posting all this.

  144. Hi Todd,
Not completely true : There are 3-4 links under album covers in the main post which all work. Hope you enjoy them!
As for the other 50 albums - this post was written 10 years, 4 months and 29 days ago, so that's unsurprising.
If you feel like contributing :
You might be able to find them on Soulseek. Upload them to a cloud account, then post the 50 links in comments here - and I'll be happy to link them all up again! :)
