Simon says :
Going by the downloads for "Latin Rhodes 2", we've got some latin heads here. So here are three fantastic, slamming slabs of Mongo Santamaria vinyl, donated here by Bacoso - followed a discography of 54 of his albums. Some are uploads by readers here, and the rest are blog links - this one of those posts that keeps growing and growing. Yes, you need all of these albums :)
"MIGHTY MONGO" (1964)
Bacoso says :
Essential! Heavy heavy heavy descarga session from way back when Mongo was still killing 'em dead and hadn't sold out to lame soul covers and boogaloo nonsense. Features the ferocious "Bacoso" which develops into a scorching percussion battle mid way through and the storming "Descarga at the Blackhawk". Interestingly enough, one of Joao Donato's first U.S. recordings on which he plays both piano and trombone - he contributes "Bluchanga".Ripped @320 from original vinyl.
One of the great latin LPs of the 60s.

"MONGO EXPLODES" (1967)
Bacoso says :
Mighty Mongo from 1964 on Riverside. One of my favourite Mongo albums, this one is a cracker not least for Marty Sheller's furious "Dirty Willie" .
Here's a review from Dusty Groove :
"A killer early album by Mongo Santamaria -- almost an equal blend of jazz and Latin rhythms, and a great illustration of the unique contribution that he was making to both types of music back in the 60s! Mongo's group here is filled with some really great horn players -- Nat Adderley on cornet, Marty Sheller on trumpet, Bobby Capers on alto sax, and Pat Patrick on baritone -- really hitting a hard-edged groove that's as filled with soul jazz solo inflections as it is with Mongo's great work on percussion! The reeds bring a sharp edge to the record that keeps on going throughout - pushing the set with a lot more soul than other Latin sides from the time, particularly those in the charanga mode and most tracks are short and feisty."

Bacoso says :
Mighty Mongo for Tropical Buddha from 1984. Mongo hooked back up with the great Marty Sheller for this excellent latin jazz LP which was coordinated by none other than Jack Hooke, DJ extraordinaire and the man behind the Monday night salsa meets jazz sessions at the Village Gate. Two essential cuts on this one : "Power Struggle" and "Espiritu Libre" (which has just had a reworking by Beatconducter!) Highly Recommended. Ripped @320 from original vinyl.

Thanks for all your efforts here. I've been inspired by you and the other intrepid LP collectors to start my own blog and give a bit back. Please visit me at http://rootsisforeveryone.blogspot.com - my first post is a great Stitt/Ammons album, plenty more to come!
ReplyDeleteThanks Simon, you filled some nice holes in my Mongo collection via Bacoso and the links. I'm working on a post that I will hopefully get up tonight, I'm pretty sure you'll dig it too. It's Kenny Barron's "Lucifer" which has lots of Rhodes, you know, I too can never have enough. Keep up your good work, it's greatly appreciated.
ReplyDeletePeace

hi all,
ReplyDelete2 more comp albums added to the discography, courtesy of reader Stefan :
1. The compilation “Arriba!” (1996). It contains two albums from Mongo Santamaria: “Arriba! La pachanga” (1961) and “Mas sabroso” (1961). Unfortunately the last three songs are missing in the download.
http://sonero-sonero.blogspot.com/2008/07/mongo-santamaria-arriba.html
2. The compilation “Mambo Mongo” (1993). It has the same name and is from the same year as a compilation you have already listed, but this here is a completely different CD from another label and with other songs ;)
Songs 3 – 11 are the complete album “Dawn” (1977) for which Mongo won a Grammy!! The other two songs are from somewhere else (it’s a really strange compilation).

It's almost done, only 2 albums left!! Hopefully someone out there can help to fill this gap!
Come on people!!
Xerxes
Hi,
ReplyDeleteIs the "Drums & Chants" LP on the list? I can't find it.
If it's not and you want it then I'll rip and upload...
Cheers,
Rowan
Hi Rowan -
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry, I missed your comment before. I would LOVE it if you could rip and upload "Drums and Chants", that would be fantastic, thanks.
Xerxes,
ReplyDeleteI made your contribution of "A La Carte" into my first anniversary blog post, check it here :
http://neverenoughrhodes.blogspot.com/2009/05/mongo-santamaria-la-carte-1978.html
Hi again Mongo fans -
ReplyDeleteI've done a check and overhaul of this list. Some were dead - managed to re-link about 5-10 albums to new locations.
These ones I can't find : MUCH appreciated if people could re-up :
1961 “Arriba! La pachanga”
1961 "Mas sabroso”
1970 "Mongo '70"
1971 "Mongo at Montreux"
and these ones we're still after :
1967 "Explodes at the Village Gate"
1978 "Drums and Chants"
1983 "Magic"
UPDATE :
ReplyDeleteI've uploaded these two from my own CDs @ 320kbps
1970 "Mongo '70"
1971 "Mongo at Montreux"
We need these two re-upped by someone :
1961 “Arriba! La pachanga”
1961 "Mas sabroso”
and these ones we're also still after :
1967 "Explodes at the Village Gate"
1978 "Drums and Chants"
1983 "Magic"
Hi Simon,
ReplyDeleteSorry - been away and only just read your reply about "Drums & Chants".
I'll get it sorted this weekend and let you know when it's up!
Cheers,
Rowan
Thanks Rowan!
ReplyDeleteI greatly appreciate the sharing of this collection.
ReplyDeleteHowever, the following album links are dead:
1961 - Mongo Santamaria - Arriba! La pachanga
1961 - Mongo Santamaria - Mas sabroso
1967 - Mongo Santamaria - Explodes at the Village Gate
1969 - Mongo Santamaria - Soul Bag
1978 - Mongo Santamaria - Drums and Chants
1983 - Mongo Santamaria - Magic (Roulette)
Thanks JJ -
ReplyDeleteActually the only "dead link" was "Soul Bag", which is now linked to a new place :
http://vinyl4giants.blogspot.com/2007/12/mongo-santamaria-soul-bag-1968.html
(see the word "soul" in text, and remember to thank him)
So our want list is still :
1961 - Mongo Santamaria - Arriba! La pachanga
1961 - Mongo Santamaria - Mas sabroso
1967 - Mongo Santamaria - Explodes at the Village Gate
1978 - Mongo Santamaria - Drums and Chants
1983 - Mongo Santamaria - Magic (Roulette)
Hi Rowan -
Any luck yet with "Drums & Chants" ? Keen to hear it and will make a special post :)
thanks to all,
S
I must say THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping me complete (nearly) my mongo collection.
ReplyDeleteI had up to this point about 14... and i haven't been 'blogbusting' for some time. But 6 months ago this was not available and i will say again thank you.
I will keep my eyes open for the 5 missing albums and havent checked soulseek yet.
Thank you from the bottom!
Glad to help d0za, any help back appreciated! :)
ReplyDeletehi,
ReplyDeletehere are 2 of the missing albums:
http://rapidshare.com/files/243683400/Mongo_Santamaria_-_Arriba__La_Pachanga__1961_.zip
http://rapidshare.com/files/245153507/Mongo_Santamaria_-_Mas_Sabroso__1961_.zip
"Drums and Chants" is fully compiled on the compilation "Mongo Santamaria and his Afro-Cuban Drum Beaters". Back in 1978 "Drums and
chants" was only a new edition of old songs Mongo had already published earlier.
best regards,
Xerxes
Thanks a lot for the uploads and the research, Xerxes!
ReplyDeleteWell that leaves us with two to find :
1967 "Explodes at the Village Gate"
1983 "Magic" (Roulette)
1967 "Explodes at the Village Gate"
ReplyDeleteI have this album, but I won't have access to it until September. It contains the best version of Afro Blue ever recorded (IMHO)
If you're able to bring us that album it'd be fantastic Ernest - "Afro Blue" is one of those songs I can bever get enough of :)
ReplyDeleteHi Simon,
ReplyDeleteSorry for the delay. End of semester assessments & marking...
I have just uploaded a vinyl rip of Drums & Chants, then checked in comments and seen Xerxes's point about the 'Afro-Cuban Drum Beaters', so that was a waste of time eh?!
If anyone does want to hear a fat but sometimes noisy vinyl version then go to:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/0py7n4
Cheers,
Rowan
Not a waste of time at all Rowan, your rip sounds great, and many thanks for this.
ReplyDeleteI've done a new post for it :
http://neverenoughrhodes.blogspot.com/2009/06/mongo-santamaria-drums-and-chants-1978.html
In the album A-La-Carte, the track called Teresa (composed by Bill O'Connell) is missing, and the original version of Congo Blue, from Go, Mongo! has 7:30, and that version has 5:45. And the worst part that these 2 albums are excellent!
ReplyDeleteHi anonymous -
ReplyDeletemy CD copy of "a La Carte" does not contain that track. It's a 2-for-1 CD with "Afro Indio", so they may have left off a track in order to fit both albums on.
If you come across it, please post it here, thanks.
fantastic post - killergroove has one cut afro blue from the album explodes at the villagegate http://killergroove.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_killergroove_archive.html seems to me what is missing is brazilian sunset and at the blackhawk thanks for ones I didn't have -joseito

best regards,
Xerxes
Hi Xerxes,
ReplyDeletea belated thanks for your contribution of "Red Hot" !
Now added to thread.
you are the reason I discovered Mongo Santamaria and now he is one of my favorite artists. He is really quite amazing.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for all of your music contributions!!
-Hiller
First, thank you for all that wonderfull work. I've got two Mongo Cassettes many years ago from a friend and let them run forth and back in my car for month back then. Since I've found this blog I'm again into this great and heart-warming music and only now I understand more and more also the background and way of M.S.. Unfortunately I missed the record 'Images'. All links are dead.
ReplyDeleteCould one of you who downloaded it reup it again please?
Would be realy wonderfull as it is also not in the catalogs of the sellers anymore.
Best wishes, Sarasir
Found a working El Pussy Cat:
ReplyDeletehttp://rapidshare.com/files/286511650/PEMCFlaVCG.rar
forgott to check for a pass - it's
ReplyDelete'flageolette'. There is also a hi res
scan of the cover. (http://flageolette.blogspot.com/2009/09/mongo-santamaria-el-pussy-cat-on.html)
cheers
thanks anonymous - I've put a link to Flageolette's post. Just so you know : I always prefer to link to people's original posts instead of their rapidshare links. That means that they get people thanking them for bothering to upload, so they think it's worthwhile and post more good stuff.
ReplyDeleteAnyway thanks for tracking this down!
Hello, I am LOL Music and I reuploaded again Images by Mongo Santamaría. Here is the link:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.megaupload.com/?d=EOOV3XXW
This wonderful music can't be lost. I recommend you Magic, Chango: Afro-Cuban Drums and Explodes at the Village Gate. Thanks a lot!
Thanks for the re-up :)
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for Images.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately Mongomania is also off, and I discovered that I have the wrong one - this 2CD Tribute by Gerardo Rosales...
Anyways, would be wonderful if one of you could up it again.
Listening to M.S. and Friends, Mambo Mongo a lot - it's a great piece of music. And, be aware of the man behind Mongo, Marty Sheller. His arrangements are very hot and special. Without him Mongo's music would not be the same.
Best Wishes
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=FSGC35XC
ReplyDelete445 mb
apparently contains :
Afro American Latin - La Lupe - Afro Cuban Drum Beaters - Mongomania - Sofrito - Up From The Roots
Yes, that's exactly the trap I was running in - read above! Mongomania of M.S. is not a double CD or LP and has different songs. So it seems like that we have another one to hunt.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, has anyone noticed yet that there is also a song missing on Afro Roots compared to the original LPs/CDs Yambu and Mongo? It's Mi Guaguanco, the track before the last one of original Yambu (in between Conga par Gozar and Columbia) left out because of max CD time prob. I found this song on the Fania Comp Mongo's Greatest Hits.
A link to this one is:
http://rapidshare.com/files/193078912/Mongo_Santamaria.Greatest_Hits_1995_.rar
It still works but I couldn't trace down where it comes from. The blog link shown in filestubes is dead so hurry.
cheers
Actually that was someone else's tribute to Mongo called "Mongomania" ....
ReplyDeleteHERE is Mongomania :
http://rapidshare.com/files/368212509/Mongo_Santamaria_-_Mongomania.zip
Unfortunately 2 songs are missing - Mamacita Lisa and Mongo's Boogaloo - in this Mongomania post. Mongo's Boogaloo I found on the Mongo Santamaria's Greatest Hits CD release (one of the bonus tracks) but Mamacita Lisa - any idea?
ReplyDeleteAnd, got my hands on a Yambu LP release and made hi-res scans of the cover. Anybody interested? And if, where is it best to up them?
cheers
no sign of that track, done a search, sorry ... I would be interested in Yamba, try mediafire.com
ReplyDeleteAha, never did that before - seems to work. Link is:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.mediafire.com/?uiolthyyyta
Labels will follow was running out of time yesterday.
thank you Anonymous for the hi-res scans for Yambu.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody out there have Mongo's album "Explodes at the Village Gate" from 1967 and would be so kind to upload it??
Help much appreciated!!
best regards
Stefan
Hello, I'm LOL Music and I reuploaded again Mongomania, because the recent RapidShare link is blocked.
ReplyDeleteHere is the link: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Z3I6T0ED
Thanks LOL Music ..
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for the complete Mongomania. I have the Labels of Yambu ready and also scanned Mongo Magic and Images. Will up all together soon. Will also do a LP rip of Mongo Magic, but I'm terribly busy at the moment, so please be a little patient.
ReplyDeletecheers
Thanks a lot anonymous, looking forward to "Mongo Magic" whenever you can get to it :)
ReplyDeleteHad time to do the labels of Yambu and added also a CD label and a CD cover + sleeve I made for a paper bag - I hate jewel cases! Also the scans of Mongo Magic LP cover are included - labels and bag will follow as long as somebody is interested in this work.
ReplyDelete(Please give me some feedback)
cheers
Sorry, forgot to post the link for above, here it is:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.mediafire.com/?eo53nlmnuyo
I'm getting old....
Thanks for your time and efforts on the scans anonymous - they look good! - I've added links to the scans in the discography in the appropriate places. Naturally looking forward to hearing "Mongo Magic" when you have the time to upload :) I'll do a special post when you manage to do that. Would also like to credit it to you, so perhaps think about making up an online name for yourself :)
ReplyDeleteThanks again for your work,
Simon
p.s. I just updated about 15 links in the discography (!), more to do do later ...
ReplyDeleteHello, Mongo Santamaria's album called Magic is hardest to find. But I going to post some samples for give an idea of how wonderful is this album.

ReplyDeleteHi, soon the complete Mongo Magic will come. Transferred it and cleaned it (by hand!) so far. Still needs to be cut named and encoded. Have absolutely no time now to continue but in a few days....

Thanks a lot for all of that LOL Music, have added to the discography :)
ReplyDeleteRemy has stepped forward with his "Mongo Magic" rip, thanks Remy!
ReplyDeleteNew post :
http://neverenoughrhodes.blogspot.com/2010/05/mongo-santamaria-mongo-magic-1983.html
Well that was the GOOD news about this thread.
ReplyDeleteAnd now the bad news ...
Someone systematically went through and had about 32 of the links deleted. I discovered it yesterday when getting ready for the "Mongo Magic" post.
Well, I spent Saturday night uploading what I had, and also finding some new links. The end result is that we are still missing a few of Xerxes' generous uploads :
1961 "Mas Sabroso"
and
1962 "Viva Mongo!"
I couldn't find these on my harddrive, so if Xerxes or anyone else could re-up these, it would be much appreciated!
Also, of course, the holy grail of the thread :
1967 "Explodes at the Village Gate" :)
thanks!
one more comment .....
ReplyDeleteI've just purchased "Explodes at the Village Gate" on ebay ... just need to wait for the swimming donkeys to bring it across the pacific ocean, but shouldn't be too long ..
Awesome work here Simon..Very much appreciated..Many thanks.
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome Sasha :)
ReplyDeleteOK everyone, while I'm waiting for "Explodes at the Village Gate" to arrive, would appreciate some people trying to track down these ones :
1961 "Mas Sabroso"
1962 "Viva Mongo"
OR
"At the Black Hawk", which is a re-issue of "Viva Mongo" and "Mighty Mongo".
Thanks for your assistance folks!
Ideally, someone who downloaded these before could re-up ?
WOW! FINALLY, MONGO MAGIC IS HERE. After 2 years searching it, I can have and listen this wonderful album. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
ReplyDeleteWith "Chango: Afro-Cuban drums" (some songs are in Mongo Santamaria and his Afro-Cuban drum beaters), "Explodes at the Village Gate", "Slap it" (12" single) and the full version of "Congo Blue" (from the album Go, Mongo!) I complete my Mongo Santamaría collection.
Hi anonymous -
ReplyDeleteGlad you're enjoying it :)
Sounds like you've kept the full collection - could you re-upload the missing ones for us ?
thanks,
Simon
Updates :
ReplyDelete- All the rips of "Fuego" (1972) were at 192kbps, so I've ripped from CD @ 320 and replaced the previous link with this one. Nice funky album, so check it out.
- bit more research : "Mas Sabroso" is contained within "Arriba", which was actually a re-release, so still to come are :
1967 "Explodes at the Village Gate" (1967)
which I'll rip when it gets here,
and
1962 "Viva Mongo"
(or "At the Blackhawk", which contains that album).
then we have a complete discography. Onto it guys! :)
Hi Mongo Maniacs,
ReplyDeleteMas Sabroso is comped on Arriba!
But haven't checked out the songs yet. Could be that it's not complete or short versions as on other 2 for 1 CDs.
Thanks for the Videos by the way.
First time that I saw Mongo playing - great!
Remy
P.S.:
ReplyDeleteAnd now I'm looking forward to 'Explodes at the Village Gate' impatiently, and pray every day that the swimming donkeys will not drown.
Just great here, Simon and all contributers.
Remy
Hello, I reuploaded again "Más sabroso" and "¡Viva Mongo!". Here are the links:
ReplyDeleteMás sabroso:

¡Viva Mongo!

Thanks for this useful post. LOL Music.
Big thanks for that LOL Music :)
ReplyDeleteRemy - received notification today that the swimming donkeys have begun their journey across the Pacific.
Good to hear, Simon.
ReplyDeleteI've been rebuilding 4 of my PCs since 2 weeks, slowly going nuts (replacing MBs, CPUs, drives + installing, testing... - all day long!!!). But there is already some light in sight... and then, even faster than light: ->->->->->->->->->->->->->->->
The only music I can hear occasionally - Three guesses free! - is Mongo, nevous wreck I am.
So, will be back - hopefully - in a few days...
Remy
Simon, what happened to the swimming donkeys? Hope they didn't get lost. Still working on my machines but it's getting better every day - decisions, decisions...
ReplyDeleteRemy
Hi Remy -
ReplyDeleteThe swimming donkeys have arrived, but I've been attacked by flying bats at work. Soon :)
OK tragic news ...... believe it or not, I finally got a chance to play "Explodes at the Village Gate" (turntables has been packed away) - and it's a crap copy, many skips on every track, unplayable.
ReplyDeleteMr Ebay is going to get this one sent back to him.
So sorry, no more Mongo for right now ....
No more Mongo for right now? Somebody already uploaded Explodes at the Village Gate. Here is the link:
ReplyDeletehttp://zonamusical.net/tu_zona/salsa-217/mongo-santamaria-explodes-village-gate-1967-a-325695/

Also, you guys should come and check out the new comp - "Latin Rhodes 3" :
ReplyDeletehttp://neverenoughrhodes.blogspot.com/2010/06/various-artists-latin-rhodes-3-comp-12.html
Hello, I'm LOL Music and I uploaded the album Brazilian Sunset in FLAC format. Here is the link:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.megaupload.com/?d=HQYVP6GN
And thank you very much for this space dedicated for the good music.
Thanks LOL Music :)
ReplyDeleteWho knows about a Mongo Santamaria's song called "El Tres", composed by Marty Sheller and only appears in some 45rpm discs?
ReplyDeleteThe song "El Tres" is the non-LP B-side of the Vinyl, 7", 45 RPM, Columbia 4-44886 from 1969. The A-side is the song Twenty-Five Miles.
ReplyDeletePerhaps someone can add this song, which features the Cuban tres guitar, to this collection of Mongo-music. Then this discography will be complete!
Help would be much appreciated!!
best regards,
Stefan
simon,
ReplyDeletethanks a lot for this marvelous compilation, it is great work and lovable music.
being that mongo was a pillar of latin jazz and jazz, would you know of a compilation on the discography of the other great pillar, tito puente? i love both men's work and such compilation would be a worthy endeavour.
the best to you and all people who posted,
j
Thank you, thank you! I'm a big Mongo Santamaria fan and this is terrific. All the best.
ReplyDeleteWow. What else can one say?
ReplyDeleteYou all (esp Simon) are heroes. Alot of this stuff has been über rare. Gotta love Mongo. I first heard of him from Jimi Hendrix believe it or not. Jimi mentions him in a song I can't recall at the moment.
Later I realized that he wrote Afro Blue (which I knew from Coltrane)... but these days I am seriously digging me some Santamaria direct. Thanks you guys.
Anyone have a .torrent file for all these albums? I am in Hong Kong and some of the ones hosted on megaupload I can't get (as the service won't work for HK).
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Hey Simon, I just noticed that the link for "Feelin' Alright" doesn't work anymore. Let me provide an alternative source:

Hello guys.
ReplyDeleteI was searching the net trying to find Mongos's second Lp called "Mongo" which includes the first original version of "Afro-Blue".
Unfortunately i didn't find it here.
Can anyone Help? Thank you in advance
Mongo's recording "Mongo" on Fantasy phono record 3291 (1959) was re-issued, titled "Afro Roots" (Yambú, Mongo) Prestige CD 24018-2 (1958, 1959).
ReplyDeleteHi Iskander Andrue -
ReplyDeleteI've added a link near the top of the discography to "Afro Roots" , which contains the entire album "Mongo".
Hi - Not much I can;t say that has not already been said. I'm just embarking on the downloads, and am knocked out by your efforts.
ReplyDeleteYou're right you need them all.
Many thanks. Vaughan
Whoa! I just came upon 'Never Enough Rhodes' after not havin' visited a while. I was bedazzled by Mongo Santamaria's treasure trove ...54 discs. Memory flashback! As a college sophomore I was hipped to Mongo. Sayin' all that to say...thank you for having 'n posting all this.
ReplyDeleteNone of the links work.
ReplyDeleteHi Todd,
ReplyDeleteNot completely true : There are 3-4 links under album covers in the main post which all work. Hope you enjoy them!
As for the other 50 albums - this post was written 10 years, 4 months and 29 days ago, so that's unsurprising.
If you feel like contributing :
You might be able to find them on Soulseek. Upload them to a cloud account, then post the 50 links in comments here - and I'll be happy to link them all up again! :)
Much thanks to Simon and everybody else for all the Mongo mania.
ReplyDeleteGoing absolutely Mongo on the this warm summer afternoon.
