never enough rhodes - compilation #4

'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' - D'Angelo

'Superstition' - Ahmad Jamal

'Twenty Four' - Frank McComb

Continuing the series of Fender Rhodes jazz from the 70s, this time adding a few classics to the perhaps lesser known. Joe Zawinul's version of his composition "In a Silent Way" doesn't get enough play, and with the response to the live Herbie Hancock post, I thought I'd add his fantastic "Death Wish" theme.

Also two "special contemporary guests" this time - D'Angelo with his gorgeous downtempo take on Roy Ayers' "Everybody Loves The Sunshine", and Frank McComb with his almost-spooky channelling of Donny Hathaway in "Twenty Four".

  7. hi Simon 3x6,
congrats on the comp part 4!
really good choices, and what's more, excellent artwork (again:-)
That is a really funky keyboard there! I once bought the OST Death Wish CD for little money on a sale, but I wasn't too happy with it, I'll give it a spin once again, long time no hear. By the looks of this vol.4 that 70-75 jazzrockish thing is on it's way:-)
    thanks mate!

  8. Thanks e-mile - yeah I bought a "Death Wish" CD just for the title track that I've included here - some great orchestration from Mr Hancock, but the theme is the only killer track there :)

  19. I came across your blog while looking for some Donny Hathaway. Got one and posted a comment about what a great Fender Rhodes player he was - as well as being an unbelievable vocalist (I think I've been under a rock since the 70's) - how did he get under my radar?
A whole blog dedicated to the FR! I doff my cap to you - great site.
    Many thanks.

  26. Ah YES! Today was a perfect Spring Day in the ATL, and I heard somebody playing "Everybody Loves The Sunshine," but a cover version... I asked the guy who it was and he said D'Angelo. So I went out to buy it from Amazon or iTunes or anywhere but it's not available. Yours is the first site I found it on. Thanks so much - keep groovin'!!
