"Sexual Healing" (Simon's Dark Keys mix)

"Sexual Healing" (Simon's Dark Keys Mix)

This is my own mix/mash of the vocal from Marvin Gaye's "Sexual Healing" with "Dark Keys" by the Jazz Liberatorz, with some additional editing work. "Sexual Healing" was never one of my favourite Marvin songs due to the original 80s instrumentation - so I replaced it :)

Edit : Thanks to Gilles Peterson for spinning this on Worldwide, and to all the other DJs who've subsequently picked it up for their mixes.

Feel free to publish on your blogs, but a link back would be nice! Hope you enjoy it, please leave a comment.

  1. Interesting mix... Not sure how I feel on it, as the original is so ingrained into my being as to where I can still here what was there. Got to check the "Dark Keys" track on its own though... not hip to it!

  2. very cool!! and you're right, the original song appeared in the wrong decade.

  3. sounding good, Simon....rly like it..

I think I have to check out the albums by the Jazz Liberatorz soon (just checked their Discogs entry...their albums are rated quite high ^^)

  4. i'm not much of one for remixes. i like the art form, and i think it's cool to recreate older music, but they never really appealed to me. this, however, is really solid. you have some real vision, my friend.

for some humor in your life, a guy named hathbanger remixed miley cyrus and the notorious BIG to bring us "party and bullshit in the USA." if you're familiar with the songs that went into it, it's pretty funny. look it up on youtube or elsewhere.

    anyway, thanks for this!

  5. Liking this Simon - agree that Sexual Healing never really did it for me, but re-rubbing it makes it less overfamiliar. Reminds me a bit of this mix of 'Music Feel the Soul' by the Marvin Gaye Project.

  6. loved the original, but yours is definitely respectful and better for where we are now musically. In places it sounds like it was supposed to be made that way. Only in places though. It is Marvin Gaye after all.

  7. Absolutely incredible job, two of my favorite artists put together very nicely. I really enjoy this and I hate 99.9% of mash-ups otherwise.

  8. Hi Simon!
It's great, reminds me of an old 'Superstition' rework I did back in the days at Pharaohsdance, but this one is more "advanced" :)

I'm trying to get connected to the blogs again, and I'm about to start a new blog, as a departure from my previous one, much more focused on electronics and homemade mixes. But there may be some jazz and soul from time to time. Any chance you can add me to your blogwatch (don't know how that works :) )?

    All the best

  18. Hi Simon,
thanks for all your numerous posts keep doin' what u doin' :)

as for the sexual healing remix... well it's good but I think the track looses some of the sexual mood. and I'm saying being allergic to the sound of the 80s !

    peace

  21. Thanks for all the great music you have posted, exposure to this site and other similar (but not as good) has expanded the limits of my universe, however, a recent hard drive meltdown has robbed me of all my jazz. I really learned to dig the 70's sound of obscure spiritual jazz but now it seems that there is a shortage of good sites. Simon666 do you know of a good forum where I could begin to rebuild my access to universal vibrations. thanks, Lord haw haw at roches5@tcd.ie

  24. Talking about new flavour: what about la Crème de la Crème ?

I meant let's go with the flow and pay tribute to some of the most brilliant musicians of that time ie. Robert Glasper and Chris Dave

Two things you gotta check rigth now
    - "A tribute to Roy Ayers feat. Glasper Experiment &
    Pete Rock" + Bilal

Damm these guys are just killing me !!! ENJOY!

    - Robert Glasper Trio Experiment with Bilal au Festival Jazz à la Villette.
Derrick Hodge on contrebasse and Chris Dave on drums

Watch it while you still can. It won't stay there more than a couple of days

    http://liveweb.arte.tv/fr/video/Robert_Glasper_Trio___Bilal_au_festival_Jazz_a_la_Villette/
you can enlarge the screen). Then it should be on air on Mezzo (merci vieille Europe de nourrir tes enfants)

Glasper did play grand piano and Rhodes stage piano, oh yeah...!

As u can imagine, Chris Dave blew every parisians up and down and
    cornerly, also spiralmenté

Bilal was amazing. Among the 4 songs he performed, there was Billie Holiday "Body & Soul". I am still on the top of the snowy mountain he created for us during the song. He also sharply sang "All Matters" (from Glasper last double LP). I did not remember his voice was so diverse and perfect. A true artist

    Uncomplete Track list
Down Time (with bits of Dilla "Fall in Love")
    ... feat. Bilal
    Body&Soul feat. Bilal
    Yes I'm Country(and that's o.k.)
59 south (with 3 notes of John Coltrane"My Favorite Thing")
Butterfly (starting at 74.18mn...I screamed at 74.12mn ! AH ).

There, we were all BLEW UP like only LOVE can do. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

  31. I don't generally care for remixes, but this was very well done--a significant improvement over the 80s sound. It could have used more Rhodes though, 'cause, well, you know...

  32. v v nice... soundtracked my drive home last night courtesy of Gilles Peterson

  39. Hello,
Love your blog and special thanks for the effort to offer previews!

Like your remix as well and would like to try my own luck :)
Would you mind to post the vocal track or name the source?

    Greetings from Austria,

  40. Hi m,
the source for the vocal was an acapella version on the expanded edition of the "Midnight Love" album - you should be able to search that out online somewhere ..
    thanks for the comments,
    Simon

  42. This is super dope!! I agree with you on the 80's instrumentation making this song blow, never understood how people love this one so much. But your version blows doors!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Hey Simon,

I didn't really like the original for the same reasons as you! This one is so much better! I'm gonna post this on my blog now (of course with a link to your site).

    Nice!

    ReplyDelete
  44. This is pretty cool. Thanks for sharing it.

Like most mash-ups, it has some places where it doesn't quite gel. In this case, the vocals go out of tune with the backing track from time to time. Rhythmically it works pretty well, though.

Dark Keys is a nice track.

Anyway, keep up the good work. Thanks for all the love you pass along to us.

  45. whilst i have always liked the original version (i like 80's soul stuff what can I say) this is a great remix, I have also been a fan of the Jazz Liberatorz for quite a while, so was extra keen to check this out, and even more congrats on getting play on Gilles Peterson's show, that man certainly knows good music!

  46. Far and away, the best version of this song. Great blog!

    ReplyDelete
  47. An extreme head-nod. I dig it much more than the original. I always thought the original was a tad bit corny. This remix is excellent!

    ReplyDelete
  48. beautiful mix, definitely will share this. Much better without the over produced 80s synths.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Good work, rehabilitated the track for me!
    Got any other mash-ups planned?

  55. Its interesting,of course if youa re a dark rhodes lover...the harmony int he original composition is just so good. This ends up sounding bit boring like many neosoul stuff, not that much cause its not a loop over and over but still.Nice chill mix to integrate in a neosoul session...but am not a Dj myself

  56. great (re-)mixing job! thanks for the files too!
