TAPER'S NOTES
"It was college vacation... i think the music is fantastic.
this will blow the minds of people expecting Herbie in his more pop or jazz modes. - 'Scorch' was a local guy who would sometimes sit in with visiting jazz groups. I dont know his real name or what happened to him. Dont expect the Headhunters on this, folks. This is all Sextant material. Its pretty out there, in the best possible way. Enjoy!

hey,
ReplyDeletemany many thanks for the hancock files, especially the mwandishi stuff... I was looking a long time for some live recordings from that period....
I'm a musician and I'm posting my own music at http://emptyblaukraut.blogspot.com/
we're not really jazz musicians, more free improvising, freak folk, krautrock, electronic music...
but if you're open minded and open eared maybe there is something in our music what you like....
all the best for your blog
member
Simon you keep outdoing yourself.
ReplyDeletePS the Virgo Red is up.
hey mate loving the herbie and the strata east! some quality stuff there.
ReplyDeleteWas wondering if you fancied a link? I'm happy to add yours since i love what you're doing here and would really appreciate it if you did the same.
http://analogged.blogspot.com/
By the way if you're a herbie man you should check out Dedication (it was a japanese only release recorded in a single day that he had off from touring with Miles). It's a great album and the track Nobu is brilliant.
Great post, Simon...and thanks...and you're welcome! :¬)
ReplyDeleteKeep up the good work!

Ever played that bassline and found that its really hard to actually stop playing it? It's the perpetual motion machine of basslines.
ReplyDeleteDope!!! Thanks for gathering all of this amazing music, you made my weekend and it's not even Friday yet.
ReplyDeleteHerbie is one of my favorite musicians and the '70s brings out that experimental side which I can't get enough of...
Thank You Simon!!
-B
No problems sir,
ReplyDeletecheck out the Buster Williams and Julian Priester posts as well ..
Hi guys,
ReplyDeleteAs part of the Mwandishi solo albums series, in which I posted solo albums by Buster Williams and Julian Priester, I’ve now added posts of Bennie Maupin’s ”Jewel in the Lotus” (1974) and ”Moonscapes” (1978)
Wow! Great Stuff, thanks!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely amazing stuff, Simon. I checked out your 4Brothers post when it went up, but this extended version is just ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteThanks analog6, glad you're enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteJust did a slight post alteration : the "You are what you hear" link now goes to EIGHT recent Hancock dates, including a 1999 "Headhunters" show in Munich with
Herbie Hancock : Keyboards
Bill Evans : Tenor and soprano saxophones
Daryll Jones : Electric bass
Wah Wah Watson : Electric guitar
Ndugu Chancler : Drums
MIno Cinelu : Percussion
Hi to people subscribed to this Herbie thread :
ReplyDeleteWell one of the downsides of linking to so many other blogs when I do posts is that blogs disappear, and my links become useless....
What this means is that I've just spent an hour trying to find new blog links for many of the live Hancock shows.
Some success, but the ones that are 'gone' are :
Baker's Keyboard Lounge, Detroit, Michigan, USA, 1972
Fairfield Theatre East Lansing, Michigan, USA, October 28, 1973
If anyone downloaded those ones and feels inclined to upload them, it would be much appreciated!
( or if you know of other locations where they may be ... but I've looked pretty hard)
Thanks!
Simon

ALERT
ReplyDeleteFormer Miles Davis pianist, John Beasley, did a super tribute album to HH called Letter to Herbie. AND, he is touring with Herbie's bandmates, Buster Williams and Bennie Maupin, along with the propulsive Jeff Tain Watts in London at Ronnie Scott's and Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. Geez!!! If you are lucky to be in these cities ck this smoking band out and get the album. It's getting lots of radio play and great reviews. On Beasley's site it said the album is being considered for a Grammy. Beasley's always been a musicians' musician.

Hi Ira -
ReplyDeleteThe link's not coming up with anything - went to the main site and can't seem to find them either. Do you know which # podcasts they are?
Thanks.
One way to get there is when you go on www.ropeadope.com, click on the Music heading on the nav bar and do a search on herbie. This will give you the links to all three herbie hancock shows.

http://nightofthepurplemoon.blogspot.com/2007/03/headhunters-feat-herbie-hancock-north.html
Thanks Ira, done a quick cover for that one too.
ReplyDeleteNumber stays at 39 as I noticed a double-up with one of the 13 shows from "You Are What You Hear", which I'll bring 'properly' into this thread at some stage.
I noticed that the 1998 show on nightofthepurplemoon.blogspot is a dead link. The same show appears on Dr. Fusions site as well, although it looks to be not as complete.
ReplyDeleteHere is the link

ReplyDeleteThat Belgrade show is one of the 13 shows at "You Are What You Hear" (the link at the base of the list). My intention is to bring all of those 13 into this list and make covers for them (ha!) ... so when I do that, I'll add that one as an alternative link.
Thanks for your searching work!
simon

Thanks Obnoxius,

Thanks Ira, I'll get that linked up soon.
ReplyDeleteHi there just wanted to say what a cracking blog this is, incredible music, great insightful comments, an education it is. I only wish I had something tangible that I could contribute to your blog but I don't, is it possible to donate $? Excellent all round blog though keep up the great work, peace.
ReplyDeleteHi Andre -
ReplyDeleteGlad you're enjoying it :)
Thanks also for the $$ offer, but I guess my 'payment' here is having conversations with people about the music I love - so comment on albums here, discuss things you like, it's all good : )
thanks,
Simon
I discovered your blog while searching for some of Herbie's sheet music. Fantastic stuff you have here. Introduced my son to it, and he's very excited by the music here. Keep doing what you're doing because this music just keeps a certain spirit alive that sustains me, and I know it sustains a whole lot of folks out there as well from all over the world. Warm regards.
ReplyDeleteCan someone please repost the Herbie Hancock Quartet (with Michael Brecker) "Live at Suntory Hall, Tokyo"? Dr. Fusion's Blog no longer exists, and I'd really love to hear this. Anyone? Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteSecond request:
ReplyDeleteCan someone please repost the Herbie Hancock Quartet (with Michael Brecker) "Live at Suntory Hall, Tokyo"? Dr. Fusion's Blog no longer exists, and I'd really love to hear this. Anyone? Thanks!!
Hey there, I just saw your comment now (!!) Shame on me...
ReplyDeleteDid you manage to get the PBS video. It is indeed part Wheather report part Headhunters. I burned it on DVD with menu and all. I can do a copy for you; no problem
Comparing to what you did for fusion jazz, it is the less I can do to thank you !
Cheers
Hey Gildas -
ReplyDeleteI actually managed to get hold of that last week and am going to post soon. Thanks anyway!
Good 4U !! I remember when waiting for that video; I was as excited as when I got my hands on a live session in 1995 by hip-hop band Digable Planets (well on audio - by the way, if anyone got video from that period...)!
ReplyDeleteVid quality is not good and sound quite alright but ..it is simply HISTORY !!
Have you seen the 8mn video of Mwandishi band in Molde starting with Eddie Henderson big head !?
Check it on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lTimyz9T7k
Cheers
Simon666, (sorry to interrupt), You don't have the Herbie Hancock Quartet (with Michael Brecker) "Live at Suntory Hall, Tokyo"? I'd really love to hear it...
ReplyDeleteNope sorry no live with M Brecker
ReplyDeleteCheers
Oh talking about rare stuff: IF ANYONE CAN HELP HERE !! feel free to contact me
I am looking for the video of the show from Donald
Byrd + Blackbyrds + Mizell Brothers, on July 5th 1973 in Montreux(see link who also mentions Nathan Davis ..ouh LOrd !!)
http://www.montreuxsounds.com/detail2006.php?fiche=214
For your info: there were 5 sessions by Blue Note that year during the festival. one with Bobby Hutcherson, one with Bobbi Humphrey, one with Marlena Shaw, one with Ronnie Foster and one with Dr Byrd
But you know this BN serie, right!
PS bis: I wrote to some guy at Montreux Video; they got it but don't know where and won't release it
THOUGH you can see 3mn of this show in the Mizell documentary from Red Bull Musci Academy - Melbourne 2006
I wrote to them as well...no more available
So if anyone knows Donald Byrd or Mizell brothers personaly ...
Cheers
thanks for that youtube video gildas, great stuff :)
ReplyDeleteAnd no, can't help with that Byrd request - sounds great though!
Alos, Journeyman and anonoymous - I didn't actually grab that one from Dr Fusion's, so no help there either sorry ..

ReplyDeleteI really appreciate your effort for uploading alll these wonderful lives of herbie hancock
i was wondering though if you can upload this one, which is herbie hancock's 2005 the headhunters at Bonnaroo music festival...
Don't have that one sorry Aaron ... if you come across it, drop a link back here ok ?
ReplyDeleteAnd He will be playing in poland! :D
ReplyDeletehttp://biletynakoncertyfestiwale.wordpress.com/2010/09/25/dwadziescia-najciekawszych-koncertow-w-listopadzie/
Great stuff. If you add new shows, do you always add them on the bottom, or do I have to check the complete list if there are new shows?
ReplyDeletehi anonymous -
ReplyDeletea while since updating this thread, but if I make changes or additions I'll note them here
Huge thank you for making these recordings available! The Mwandishi-band is by far one of my absolute favorite constellations from this time, pure joy to listen to! Too bad some of the links have disappeared (the Baker's Lounge esp) but hell, I'm happy anyway!
ReplyDeleteThanks again!
Hi Simon,
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the wonderful concerts on this site! I have a question....There is 1 concert I'm desperately looking for and that is the V.S.O.P. II : NHK Hall, Tokyo 19.5.1983 concert. The link you refer to on this site doesn't work. Is there any way you can upload that concert again. It will be much appreciated!
Sorry Marc, I've mainly held on to the 70s concerts, the rest were just links. If you manage to get a file please tell us here!
ReplyDeleteI've noticed a torrent version :
http://www.bootsdaily.com/?nav=details&id=215204
Also a youtube video, 86 mins :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcZchIBrtZE
Thanks for the reply Simon. I've already noticed the youtube version but I had hoped for better audio quality. I'm gonna check out the torrent version. Thanks and if I have managed to get a good audio file I will upload it to you!
ReplyDeleteHi Simon
ReplyDeleteI know you mainly held the concert from the 70ies, but I do hope you did grab this one that I somehow missed, although I have been folloiwng the blòog for years
Herbie Hancock / Bobby Hutcherson Quartet
Live at the Barbican March 7, 2003
@ Smuggled Sounds
Let me know, since the linke at SS is dead
thanks in advance
Trame
hi there
ReplyDeletei have been on this post and on dr fusion blog but lot of stuff have deseapeared
i am looking for the Nakano Sun Plaza, Tokyo, Set. 29, 1978
can you help me to find this great concert
thank you for the great list. is it possible to have a fresh link for the arhus gig (it is megaupload)?
ReplyDeleteHi chris_c -
ReplyDeleteI lost some of these in an HD crash sometime ago, and while I still have some of them, I'm unfortunately missing that one .
Can anyone else on this thread upload the Aarhus show ?
For those of you looking for the shows with dead links... plus some others, check out http://tela.sugarmegs.org/alpha/h.html or sugarmegs streaming server. They've got the Baker's Keyboard Lounge and the Fairfield Theatre sets that went missing, plus a wicked Mwandishi era set not listed here and the best Headhunters set I ever heard (Tivoli Copenhagen '71 and Boston Jazz Workshop '73 respectively). They also have tons of live Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and others for those interested. Extremely recommended!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Jacob - thanks for your post and a reminde rthat I need to fix this thread. The sugarmegs ones are pretty low quality, I've got better - I'll do a re-upload of most of the 70s concerts over the next few days, including the Tivoli one (which is, btw, in the list above)
ReplyDeleteSimon
Everything from the 70s is now re-uploaded except for Strata Gallery in Detroit (so about 15 re-ups). For several I have replaced the original versions with lossless versions .
ReplyDeleteThank you Kind Sir, I have only downloaded one MWANDISHI show at present but I thought it was more important to thank you than to keep downloading. I fully understand your position and may only download 1 or 2 more shows. Again thank you for something I would not be able to hear without your generosity.
ReplyDeletehey James, thanks for the comment :)
ReplyDeleteEveryone - the Strata Detroit show has now also been added, so we have a complete 70s set.
Thanks for the effort. I hope you are planning to reup more broken links...
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Simon & everyone for the original Mwandishi live & solo threads & for these live re-ups - I needed to 'upgrade' my collection & missed a couple first time round. Basically this Mwandishi & the Teramasu Hino collecton posts are two of the best threads ever put up anywhere in blogland...
ReplyDeleteCheers,
HJ
Thanks for the comments guys :) danielfa, tell me which broken links on the relevant threads, and I'll get to them when I can.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Simon666! I missed some of these sets the first time around, and am incredibly excited to listen to them now. For the record, the Tivoli Copenhagen '71 set I mentioned is a different set than the one listed. It features about 3 minutes of "Wiggle Waggle" and a staggering, breathtaking 57 minutes of "Wandering Spirit Song". The Headhunter's set I also mentioned (Boston Jazz Workshop '73) is the "second set" that Herbie himself mentions at the end of the Mwandishi Boston '73 set listed at the top. Pretty cool to think that Herbie went from ethereal, spacey Mwandishi to funky Headhunters all in the same day! Anyway, kudos to you, Simon666. I'm a Mwandishi maniac, and I have you to thank for the bulk of my live Mwandishi collection.
ReplyDeleteMay this music never die, nor be forgotten,
Jacob
Oops! My apologies... The Headhunters set was a bit later that year (October), not the "third" set that Herbie referred to in the March set listed above. Anyway, thanks again!
ReplyDeleteHere is another show that I found for you on this website, Dated 11.11.75 from Kansas City Mo
ReplyDeletehttp://infinitefool.blogspot.com/
idude
Thanks Jacob for the comments, and idude for the link - seems to be a few more 70s sets there, will link up soon :)
ReplyDeleteWOW ! Keep the good job my friend !
ReplyDeleteAll 1970s links updated
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention I have Hancock with Michael Brecker, Buster Williams & Al Foster
ReplyDelete@ Montreux Festival 7/7/88. Great, at least the music but the sound is so-so. Let me know if you want I send it to you.
And thanks again for all the marvels on your blog !
Thanks for all this wonderful live Mwandishi stuff (w/ Gleeson!). I've been waiting ages to hear what that was really like.
ReplyDeleteThis is much more than a "blog post", this is a monumental labor of love - well done!
SIMON666 HELP ME google keeps telling me there is a security error when i try and download the files from ADrive... how do i get them? could ya send them to me separately?? cheers
ReplyDeleteHi Joseph, it's working for everyone else, so the problem must be with your computer or your security systems. Try and download from someone else's house.
ReplyDeleteHey man thank you so much for making this happen AND work!!
ReplyDeleteI prayed for more live headhunters material.. and i found so much hahaaa
Thanks, thanks, many thanks.
Thanks very much.Great stuff.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot for the Mwandishi recordings, my favourite period of Herbie Hancock's career.
ReplyDeleteHello! I just now, somehow, found your wonderful and absolutely generous blog with much shared music. THANK YOU! Your question may be as dead as "all the dead links" BUT - if I CAN HELP, let me know.
ReplyDeleteHi Children's Well-Being -
ReplyDeleteIt's all good in this list up from 1971 to 1985 , but all the links are dead after that - it was mostly me linking to other blogs. Anything you have after 1985 would be great!
thank you! :D
