comp #10- 'MPS Loves Fender Rhodes'
Simon says :
Today my friend Ish - he of the many blogs - is here to present the latest in our ongoing series of rhodes compilations, a fantastic collection he's curated from MPS albums featured at his blog Magic Purple Sunshine. Take it away Ish ...
'Mindwill' excerpt
Ish says :
When I created Magic Purple Sunshine just a few months ago, I had a vague idea of what the MPS sound was. I had shared a couple MPS albums on my blog Ile Oxumare, and owned a few more. I thought wouldn't it be cool to try and create a blog where the combined forces of Blogland could share and collect the music of this exceptional European jazz label. It would be based on the idea behind my Strata-East Fan Club blog, but bigger. Much bigger! The idea would be that the whole discography would be listed as a kind of skeleton, and then I'd go out and try to find links.
'Shelda' excerpt
And so it began. Now listing close to the entire MPS discography of well over 500 albums, thanks to this universe of blog owners and visitors, it actually has downloadable links--both blog links and direct shares--for hundreds and hundreds of these albums. It's a completely collective work that owes its content to its very generous readers.
'North Beach' excerpt
It turns out the MPS Sound is bigger than I thought! There's all kinds of jazz represented, and lots of cousins from the worlds of Brazilian music, Now Sound/Easy Listening, and others. I haven't been able to download and listen to all the albums posted there, but I've listened to a lot, and WOW.
Some are not to my taste. There's music there certainly more suited to a 1960s TV game show or perhaps the next Austin Powers flick. Some would even put your grandma to sleep. But some are INCREDIBLE. MPS excelled and innovated in progressive, electrified jazz: and not just outright fusion but a unique sound that could be loud and free, groovy and funk-tinged, or mellow and melancholic. And guess what? Key to that sound was the Fender Rhodes electric piano. So here I am at Simon's blog: the perfect place to tease Blogland with an introduction to some sides that might not be so well-known.

13. 'Poobli' - Alphonse Mouzon - from 'Virtue' (1977)
A note about quality: I tried to glue this together in iTunes, and hopefully the ID3 tags will sequence everything correctly. The tracks are of varying quality, mostly high kbps mp3s : I couldn't begin to tell you where the originals came from; most are from shared albums, and ALL the full original albums are linked at Magic Purple Sunshine. The whole thing is timed to fit on a single CD.
So now that you've been touched by MPS-Love, come on over and get a full dose. New album links are posted almost every day. And don't forget to leave a comment for the gracious sharers of this incredible music.

Thanks! Great post.
Whoa! Talk about teamwork! You guys are the Dons!
Ish, thanks for this great comp. Soooo many LPs to sift through on MPS and it's nice to get some pointers since I'm unfamiliar with a good 2/3 of the artists. The last Mouzon track is one of my all-time faves though and still stands out and sounds fresh today.
glad to hear you folks are enjoying this. I feel lucky to be part of Simon's blog, he's doing great work here!

thanks. this will be my introduction MPS.
Ish, many thanks for distilling some of this down for us. The MPS vibe is many stranded in my listening experience and so its great to hear a professional archivists take on things.
This blog - and it's referrals - opened a whole new universe to me. Thank you so much. Some of the German stuff I would have come across at some stage (born there in '58 and lived there for 39 years). Herbolzheimer, Dauner, Mangelsdorff etc. have always been some of my favourites. You guys are doing an amazing job - and that is barely enough to describe all your hard work and efforts. I - for one - am extremely grateful to you.
Thanks Ish (and Simon),
I've only just begun checking out the MPS stuff. So this is a very handy introduction. My favourite track on this compilation is "Mindwill, from Mild Maniac". Wow, is that one groovy!
Thankz a lot
Very nice!
peace!
Simon, Ish,
Finally getting around to giving this a listen.
Thanks indeed for this.
All your effort and love for the music is greatly appreciated.

the 1st pt is no longer available - although it's on rapidshare, dl doesn't work. anyhow, great compilations. love them all
Yeah, sorry to see Part 1 gone... : (
ANY chance we can get a reup on part 1??? this blog is FANTASTIC!!!
New upload in post
Are you really sure Bora Rokovic - Soft hands in the Rain is played on a Fender Rhodes? It sounds really rather like a Hohner Pianet (which I besides enjoy).
hey Felix -
Not at all sure, and you may be right :) I mentioned in some of the earlier rhodes compilation posts that not all of the tracks would specifically be rhodes, with inclusion of Wurlys and other electric pianos, but haven't repeated that in every post. Glad you're enjoying it!
Hi, the link has expired :-(
Would you be kind enough to provide a new link please?
Thank you so much!
Link fixed!
Wow - from a lifetime ago! Nice one Simon!
Thank you so much Simon!
